VTCT Skills Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering

The VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering is aimed at all ages from 16+

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for barbering and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior barber. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Cut men’s hair using basic techniques
  • Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
  • Dry and finish men’s hair
  • Create basic outlines and detailing in hair

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to advise and consult, and provide a range of cutting and barbering services specifically for men’s hair, which includes shaving and creating facial hair shapes.
In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.

Optional units include (this list is not exhaustive): assist with shaving services, relax hair, perm and neutralise hair, plait and twist hair and colour and lighten men’s hair.

The VTCT Skills Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed junior barber. This qualification is based on the Level 2 Barbering National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional association (The British Barbering Association – BBA) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior barber.

Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 1 qualification in hairdressing/barbering and/or a successful skills test and interview.

This is one of two VTCT Skills qualifications in barbering at Level 2. Whilst both qualifications qualify learners to become a junior barber, this qualification requires learners to work in a commercial barbering shop/salon whereby assessments must be carried out on real paying clients in line with commercial service times. In contrast, the VTCT Skills Level 2 Diploma in Barbering allows learners to gather evidence in a realistic working environment or real working environment without the need for fee paying clients.

The VTCT Skills Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering is most suitable for learners seeking to work in, and develop their skills in a commercial setting, and can only be delivered by colleges that have, or have access to a ‘real’ barbers shop/salon, and not a realistic working environment.

This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group and will prepare learners for employment as a junior barber.

This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior barber including: health and safety; client consultation; shampooing and conditioning hair; basic haircuts; blow dry and finishing and cutting facial hair to shape. These units are all mandatory.

Learners will also develop their understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional specialist units which include changing men’s hair colour; creating basic patterns in hair; perming; reception duties and promoting products and services to clients. This qualification’s structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as a junior barber.

Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Barber (SRB) with The Hairdressing Council.

The VTCT Skills Level 2 Certificate in Barbering is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in; the creative art of cutting men’s hair, the specialist work of cutting facial hair and how to offer a good consultation service for clients.

Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge of health and safety whilst working in the barbering industry.

You will also develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills learned throughout this qualification.

The purpose of this qualification is to develop your practical skills to a high level of occupational ability to enable you to perform your own salon services.

There are no formal prerequisite qualifications that you must have prior to undertaking this qualification.
